Overview

This standard is about reaching full agreement and shared understanding of the brief and design visualization, it is also about ensuring that it meets the creative vision and is practicable and achievable within the budget and time parameters.

It is an iterative process that may involve many versions. It may involve working from or refining a predefined brief or it may involve creating one.

 

Performance criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. Pidentify requirements or creative concepts directors, producers or  creative teams may have
  2. collate information about the period, genre and type of production in relation to the design requirements to make creative design decision
  3. interpret the brief considering what will be practicable to meet the creative vision
  4. suggest amendments, additions or alternatives to enhance the brief when required
  5. develop design visualisation that portrays the desired era, place and context
  6. consider how the use of visual or special effects may affect design visualisation
  7. confirm with relevant people that you have a shared understanding of the design
  8. check and confirm that your interpretation and design visualisation are technically feasible and identify the implications
  9. check and confirm that design visualisation can be achieved to meet production requirements
  10. suggest viable alternatives if requirements change

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the techniques and the creative concepts
  2. the production brief and how to obtain it
  3. how to obtain the script and how to interpret information from it
  4. where to get budget, schedule, and location information
  5. how your experience, skills, knowledge, and judgment influence your creative input
  6. how to portray time, place, and context through colour, design and objects
  7. sources of information on colour, design and objects for particular eras, locations and contexts
  8. how visual effects can be used to enhance production design
  9. visual representation tools and the benefits and disadvantages of these
  10. how to present and justify your designs
  11. how to identify the cost implications and the practicalities of realising visualisations including materials, equipment, locations, and budgets
  12. the technical feasibility requirements and assessments
  13. the impact of changing requirements including budget cuts or changing creative vision
