Overview

This standard is about caring for props, including their use and maintenance during production, and storage when not in use.

This standard also covers aspects of health and safety when handling and dealing with props.

Props: can be either those that have been hired, or those that belong to the production company, or product placements, or all of these.

This standard may be suitable for all props roles.

 

Performance criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. make props available as required by the shooting schedule
  2. handle props with care to maintain their condition
  3. check that props are in an appropriate condition for use
  4. check the safety of props regularly to protect yourself and others from danger
  5. check the condition of props, and record any damage or malfunctioning
  6. check props which are not in use, confirm they are fit for purpose, and store them appropriately and safely
  7. check that working props will function throughout the production period
  8. carry out modifications and running repairs when required
  9. confirm the arrangements for modifications and repairs when these cannot be carried out on the set
  10. make arrangements for repair and/or replacement when required
  11. handle and store consumable props in line with hygiene regulations
  12. provide facilities for storing consumable props
  13. ensure items are kept in positions that enable safe access for retrieval and in the order in which they are required for use in the production
  14. store props when they are not in use
  15. keep records of the location and condition of props
  16. when they are no longer required, return props and other materials to suppliers, hirers, or storage in a clean and appropriate condition, accompanied by the relevant documentation

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the importance and value of each prop to the production
  2. different types of props, their characteristics and uses
  3. how to check that all required props are available for the production
  4. procedures for protecting all props
  5. specific procedures for protecting higher value props
  6. safe handling and storage requirements for different types of props and materials
  7. how to avoid damaging props and other materials when checking them
  8. how to identify faulty props, what actions to take and who to inform
  9. methods for repairing different types of props
  10. arrangements for dealing with props which cannot be repaired during the production session
  11. methods of preserving the condition of props and materials
  12. the cost implications of the loss of, or damage to, product placement items
  13. arrangements for returning props and other materials
  14. arrangements for storing, recycling, or disposing of, props and other materials in compliance with the relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and protocols
  15. the importance of keeping records of props usage
