Overview

This standard is about preparing sets or locations for each day’s shoot.

This standard is also about confirming security arrangements for the set or location and ensuring that all required props are available.

This standard may be suitable for the role of standby props.

 

Performance criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. laise with security personnel to arrange for the shooting set or location to be unlocked
  2. set out production chairs for artists and tables for other crew members in the correct locations
  3. arrange and check, prop working area, ensuring that all required props and equipment are available
  4. use hand tools to prepare props as required
  5. prepare sets for each day’s shoot, ensuring that all props are placed following the script or continuity requirements including camouflaging if required
  6. check that all required hand props are available
  7. inform all personnel if smoke machines are to be used
  8. check that artists have been trained how to use working props
  9. check electrical props and make sure they passed as safe for use by the electrical department
  10. at the end of each shooting day, liaise with security personnel to arrange for shooting set or location to be locked, and ensure that valuable or fragile props are stored securely
  11. comply with health and safety legislation, regulations and protocols

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the requirements of the script and of the production schedule
  2. how to liaise with members of other departments
  3. security arrangements on set or location
  4. the required contents of a set box including cleaning equipment, tools,
  5. the characteristics and requirements of various tools, including power tools, saws
  6. the seating requirements for artists and crew
  7. the props requirements for each shooting day
  8. the equipment required for on set maintenance and/or repair of props
  9. which props may need replacing for re-takes
  10. how to use specialist equipment such as smoke machines, safely and efficiently
  11. what precautions to take when smoke machines are used
  12. the cost implications for the loss of, or damage to product placement items
  13. whether props, equipment, or other items may need to be concealed on  set or location, and how to camouflage them
  14. how to ensure the security of the set or location is secure, and that all props are safely stored on set
  15. the health and safety legislation, regulations, and protocols
