Overview

This standard is about understanding the technical requirements of  dressing set regarding their case of use and safety for the shooting crew.

This standard is about interpreting the designers’ set plan sketches and instructions.

You will be required to plan for skills, materials, tools and equipment and cost.

This standard may be suitable for all props roles.

 

Performance criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. interpret the designers’ or others’ set plan sketches or verbal ideas/instructions
  2. coordinate a team of dailies to run a set or location
  3. unpack and check all props received from prop houses against the props list
  4. report any discrepancies to the appropriate people and secure replacements where props are missing or not suitable for use
  5. provide estimates of set dressing costs to the production designer or head of department
  6. source specialist skills, tools, and materials to meet the design requirements of the production
  7. provide the required tools,for set dressing and use, maintain and store them safely
  8. provide and utilise the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  9. identify any specialist equipment that may be needed,for dressing the set and confirm that it has been adequately tested and that operators are qualified to use them
  10. dress the set in line with production requirements and deadlines
  11. distress, age or otherwise adapt props as required
  12. secure fixings to a variety of surfaces
  13. carry out maintenance and repairs when required

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the requirements of the production schedule
  2. how to liaise with members of other departments, and interpret their requirements
  3. how to use a variety of tools and materials safely following manufacturers’ instructions
  4. the characteristics and requirements of various tools, including power tools, saws
  5. the characteristics of various substances, including glues, paints, etc.
  6. safe fixing methods onto or into various surfaces, including picture hanging with minimal damage, the use of private homes as locations, etc.
  7. which props may need distressing, ageing or otherwise adapting according to script requirements
  8. when to seek specialist advice in the safe use of electrical equipment
  9. what voltage is available on the set or location
  10. what certification is required such as Hot Work permit
  11. what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing is required
  12. working at height regulations
  13. the specialist training or testing required for the use of plant such as cherry pickers, diggers, fork lifts and scissor lifts
  14. when specialist skills such as gardening, welding are required
  15. the health and safety legislation, regulations and protocols for the production
