Overview

This standard is about working with the machinist in the mill to process timber/plywood to meet requirements for the set. It requires working out how much material is required and ensuring those quantities are available to the right quality.

It requires that the mill hand works with the machinist on many different machines complying with legislation and protocols and has sufficient knowledge of the different processes the timber must go through to be fully prepared. To complete the process the prepared material must be delivered to the required places within the set or outside location.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. agree with the wood machinist how much material is required for each cutting list
  2. arrange to have the required amount of material ready and available for use
  3. check that the quality of the timber/plywood selected meets the requirements of the planned activity
  4. when joinery type timber is required, select the best available timber for the work
  5. follow the agreed sequence to complete the required finish to the items
  6. arrange for the finished items to be moved to the required location
  7. use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety guards when required
  8. ensure all activities involving machinery operation and movement of timber or plywood are carried out complying with health and safety legislation and protocols
  9. regularly check that the dust extraction system is functioning correctly and whether the bags require emptying

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the health and safety legislation for working on hazardous machinery
  2. what safety guards, personal protective equipment to use when working on hazardous machinery
  3. how to operate the machines under guidance with the wood machinist
  4. risk assessment techniques
  5. the correct positioning and securing of tooling
  6. the types and characteristics of different timber and plywood used for film production such as oak, ash, balsa, pine
  7. how to calculate how much timber is required to meet the demand for cut timber
  8. how to organise the timber from stores and whether to collect it or have it delivered
  9. the different processes each piece of timber could require
  10. what type of timber to select for joinery type timber
  11. how to organise the movement of finished items
  12. the importance of working efficiently with the wood machinists and/or turners and following instructions when working with the machinery
