Overview 

This standard is about using tools and equipment tofulfil designated tasks within the stagehandsenvironment.

It requires that you operate and handle all such tools and equipment safely, and that you know how to carry out checks on them before use, reporting any defects to the relevant person, for example the supervising stagehand.

Tools and equipment in use may include a table saw, a chop saw and an extractor unit. It also requires that you keep a tool kit that complies with stagehand operations.

 

Performance criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. identify powered tools and equipment for the work activity
  2. carry out pre-start inspections and performance checks
  3. prepare, set up and adjust the tool and equipment for the work activity
  4. operate tools and equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and safety regulations
  5. identify defects affecting the operation or safety of tools and equipment and report these defects to the relevant person
  6. monitor potential risks and hazards to others
  7. ensure powered tools and equipment are stored safely

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. types of powered tools and equipment and associated attachments
  2. approved procedures and practices for carrying out the work activity
  3. how to change and fix necessary accessories and attachments
  4. how to operate tools and equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and safety regulations
  5. safe handling techniques for the powered tools and equipment
  6. how to identify different types of performance defects associated with the powered tools and equipment
  7. requirements for ventilation and use of personal protective equipment
  8. responsibilities under the health and safety legislation and regulations
  9. how to store powered tools and equipment safely
