Overview

This Standard is about making and using mounts, fascicules, binders, containers, frames, cases, barriers or screens to protect, house or display cultural heritage. Cultural heritage can refer to objects that are on display or in storage or to historic buildings, structures, sites or settings

It includes assessing the options and technical requirements for protection, making or adapting the protective elements, installing protection, housing or display components, labelling for curatorial purposes, marking for security purposes and completing records.

This standard is for anyone who is responsible for making and using items to protect, house or display cultural heritage.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. assess the protection, cushioning, support, environmental and security measures required to protect cultural heritage
  2. assess protection, housing and display options that enable all visitors to enjoy cultural heritage
  3. identify options and the most appropriate course of action for mounting, protecting and displaying cultural heritage
  4. make or adapt mounts, protective or display components as needed using appropriate materials
  5. install protective, housing or display components in appropriate positions
  6. ensure that protective, housing or display methods maintain the integrity of cultural heritage
  7. label objects or components for curatorial purposes using appropriate methods and materials
  8. mark objects or components for security purposes using appropriate methods and materials
  9. make accurate and clear records of actions as appropriate to the work context

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:                       

  1. what materials and structures are appropriate to protect cultural heritage
  2. the different methods of protecting cultural heritage, and which is the most appropriate to use depending on the materials, structure and intended outcome
  3. what you are protecting cultural heritage from
  4. the impact of different protection, housing and display options on visitors with special needs
  5. the different strategies available to enable access to exhibitions or displays for visitors with special needs
  6. how to make protective structures
  7. how to install protection or provide safe storage
  8. record-keeping, security and documentation and the other relevant procedures
  9. the types of documentation system used, how to operate them, the main differences between digital and manual systems and possible problems with them
  10. how to mark objects, supports and packing to organisational, conservation and curatorial standards
