Overview

This standard is about managing the development of online cultural heritage content. This could be in relation to online events, interactive guided tours, making sure online collections are accessible or any other aspect of online content for the organisation.

It includes identifying requirements, ensuring design, format, style, structure, functionality, navigational devices and use interface meets requirements, organising cultural heritage content, user testing and presenting information to decision makers.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. use information from reliable sources to identify expectations and requirements
  2. ensure online cultural heritage content has the potential and substance to meet organisational and target market requirements
  3. ensure technical and cultural heritage aspects are developed by people with appropriate skills and expertise
  4. ensure design, format and style complies with budget and meets expectations and requirements
  5. make sure design makes optimum use of target platforms and relevant available technologies
  6. ensure content, structures, navigational devices and interface functions are appropriate to target users and product purpose
  7. ensure functionality meets project expectations and requirements
  8. make sure cultural heritage information is accurate and suitable for presentation online
  9. ensure online cultural heritage content adheres to relevant regulations, codes of practice and organisational policies
  10. present sufficient information about concepts, design and functionality to appropriate people at key stages during development to enable them to understand
  11. test user interfaces with appropriate people to ensure it meets requirements and expectations

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:                       

  1. sources of information about requirements and expectations, target users, context of the work and any commercial factors
  2. the interrelations between content, design and technology including any requirements for localisation
  3. skills and expertise required to develop websites, applications and interactive media and the organisational processes for recruitment or outsourcing
  4. relevant standards, conventions and guidelines including guidelines and best practice for user comfort and quality of experience
  5. the impact of diversity, inclusivity, accessibility, ethics, emotional intelligence and behavioural psychology on projects
  6. principles of interaction design including usability, accessibility and effects on users
  7. methods of checking technical aspects including optimal use of target platforms and available technologies
  8. parameters for presenting cultural heritage information online
  9. when user testing should be carried out, who should be involved and how to use results to inform projects
  10. how to structure content in a logical and consistent manner
  11. levels of detail about concepts, design and functionality required by decision makers including the benefits and use of taster materials
