IMPQI263 – Implement and evaluate visual management systems in food operations

Overview 

This standard is about the skills and knowledge needed for you to implement and evaluate visual management systems to support your organisation's drive to improve food operations. This is important in increasing productivity and success of manufacture, processing and supply within the food supply chain. Understanding the power and advantages in the use of visual management systems and its contribution to an improvement strategy is important in a performance driven culture.

You will need to show and understand how you agree the scope for the visual management system including the work area or activity in which it is to be implemented. You will also need to show and understand how to implement the VSM into the selected work area or activity and evaluate and maintain the effectiveness of the visual controls. You will need to comply with your company policy for improvement, take responsibility for your actions, and refer any issues outside of the limit of your authority to others.

This standard is for you if your role requires you to implement and evaluate visual management systems in food or drink operations including manufacturing, processing, packing or supply chain activities. You may have responsibilities for aspects of organisational improvement in a team leadership or management role.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Agree objectives

  1. select a process or work area in which to implement the visual management system in accordance with the improvement plan
  2. agree objectives with the relevant personnel
  3. present and agree your plans for implementing a visual management system to the relevant personnel

Implement and evaluate the visual management system

  1. complete a review of the visual controls in accordance with agreed objectives
  2. determine the measures of performance that best support the process or work area
  3. co-ordinate the creation of visual management systems in accordance with the improvement plan
  4. maintain effective communication with those affected by the system development
  5. apply measurement techniques so that the visual management system communicates the visual controls for the process or work area
  6. evaluate the visual management system to determine impact, effectiveness and whether it is fit-for-purpose
  7. check and confirm that relevant personnel are able to interpret and use the visual controls
  8. monitor and maintain the effectiveness of the visual controls and their application in accordance with procedures

  1. the organisation's improvement vision, strategy, objectives and the reasons for implementation of improvement programmes
  2. the health, safety and hygiene requirements of the area in which you applying the visual management systems
  3. why visual management systems are necessary to food and drink operations activities
  4. the benefits of an effective visual management system to deliver objectives within the improvement strategy
  5. the work area/operational activity where the visual management systems are to be implemented
  6. the food or drink operations activity that the visual management systems are to support
  7. the factors to be considered when selecting a visual management system
  8. where to find the information required to develop a visual management system
  9. how to use visual management systems to create `the visual factory'
  10. how to differentiate between business performance measures and local performance measures
  11. how to determine measures of performance in a lean business environment
  12. how to apply the measurement techniques required for communicating the visual management within an area and to others who may use the information
  13. how to ensure that others are able to interpret the visual management system
  14. how visual management systems provide visual controls for work area/processing activity
  15. how to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of visual management systems
  16. the extent of your own authority, and to whom you should report in the event of problems that you cannot resolve
