Overview

 

This standard is about your ability to assess an individual performers costume and fit requirements and carry out costume fittings.

This may involve preparing costume alterations, taking accurate measurements, meeting the schedule and budget, being discrete and sensitive to the performers needs, following fitting room etiquette and providing clear instructions to others involved.

This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume assistants, costume stand bys, wardrobe assistants and costume makers.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. select and prepare costumes for the fitting process
  2. arrange convenient fitting times in line with the production schedule
  3. carry out the fitting in accordance with fitting room etiquette and procedures
  4. use the mirror reflection to assess fit/look
  5. communicate with the performers in a polite, sensitive and professional manner
  6. assess requirements and recognise faults in garments make, fit, and finish
  7. consider costume rigging /special effects when fitting
  8. take and record accurate appropriate measurements and make calculations as required
  9. assess and estimate additional fabric /material requirements
  10. prepare costumes for alternations or re-make
  11. confirm and communicate alterations required and the timescale to the person(s) carrying out the alteration work
  12. compare altered costumes with agreed alteration requirements and confirm match
  13. label costumes with comprehensive, clear information
  14. collaborate with production staff and performers to confirm that the design brief is being met
  15. check costumes for correct fit following alterations
  16. communicate alteration issues with the relevant persons (s) in a timely and discrete manner
  17. liaise with the relevant persons (s) / departments with regard to multi costumes, special effects and make-up
  18. store information according to procedures and adhering to confidentiality rules
  19. communicate with production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
  20. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

 

  1. costumes fitting procedures
  2. production requirements, design brief and costume schedule
  3. the performers and production’s requirements in collaboration with the appropriate personnel
  4. arranging fittings in keeping with the production schedule
  5. how to take and record accurate measurements and make calculations
  6. costume preparation for necessary alterations
  7. costume fit as agreed with production staff
  8. how to estimate fabric and materials requirements
  9. costume problems and faults and how to deal with them
  10. record storage and confidentiality rules were appropriate
  11. all relevant production involved and the communication protocol
  12. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
