Overview

 

This standard is about your ability to assist in sourcing and obtaining resources to achieve costume design requirements within an allocated budget.

This may involve researching and selecting services, working within time constraints, liaising with suppliers, managing people and resources, budget and account control and document and record keeping.

This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume assistants, and wardrobe assistants.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. research and select suppliers who are able to meet the creative, budgetary and logistical requirements
  2. confirm requirements and specific necessities with suppliers
  3. assess performers physical needs or artistic preferences and provide these where possible
  4. Identify and plan the acquisition of costume staff
  5. liaise with and manage people involved in the acquisition process
  6. consider the creative and technical requirements related to the making-up of the costume design
  7. select suppliers that have the specialist and technical skills needed to fulfil the design concept within budget and production deadlines
  8. negotiate and agree the terms and conditions with the suppliers
  9. conduct relationships with suppliers in a way that promotes the best results
  10. select suitable quality, quantity and type of resource
  11. check and confirm availability of the required resources
  12. agree delivery dates that meet the production schedule
  13. analyse and resolve problems related to availability, quantity or quality
  14. keep records of orders and overall expenditure
  15. monitor compliance with the agreed budget regularly
  16. identify potential budget increases, report them to the relevant person(s) and recommend suitable solution
  17. communicate with the production team and all relevant department/individuals
  18. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. potential suppliers that can supply resources in accordance with production requirements
  2. the creative, budgetary and logistical requirements of the design brief
  3. time constraints within the production schedule
  4. the creative preferences of the director and performers
  5. the quantity and types of resources required/available
  6. the creative and technical requirements of the costume design
  7. costume making processes and timescales
  8. how to negotiate with suppliers and agree terms and conditions
  9. accurate record keeping of the resources ordered and expenditure
  10. budget limitations and negotiation skills
  11. all departments /personal involved in the production and the communication protocol
  12. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
