Overview

 

This standard is about your ability to incorporate and coordinate stunt wear with costumes when dressing performers.

This may involve fitting stunt wear, briefing performers on how the stunt wear works and confirming health and safety aspects have been met with relevant parties

This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume assistants, costume stand bys and wardrobe assistants.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. identify production requirements in relation to stunt wear
  2. review health and safety risk assessments and instructions
  3. liaise with stunt action coordinators and identify specific stunt wear requirements
  4. ensure stunt wear is safe and applied correctly
  5. work with the stunt department to brief the performer on the required stunt wear
  6. agree suitable ways of concealing stunt wear and accessories
  7. apply and check costume rigging /special effects during dressing and remove when undressing
  8. ensure costumes are the correct size for the double and are suitable to fit over stunt wear
  9. check that the costume replicates the original in detail and amend if required
  10. assist the performer to dress and undress
  11. coordinate the stunt wear with the costume and fit to the performer
  12. ensure performers are comfortable and flexible within costume and
  13. confirm double / triple costumes or items required
  14. verify the number of costume changes required by the performer
  15. identify and resolve costume and stunt wear difficulties
  16. plan and prepare costumes changes considering required the schedule and the time available for performers to change
  17. negotiate extra changing time where necessary
  18. report missing items promptly
  19. ensure that costumes are stored correctly and protected during breaks in production
  20. report any servicing or repairs needed prior to the costume’s next use
  21. communicate across production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
  22. follow health, safety and environmental legislation, policies and guidelines

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. health and safety responsibilities of the stunt department
  2. your own limits of health and safety responsibility
  3. production costume requirements and schedule
  4. risk assessments and their requirements
  5. how to handle and work with stunt wear without jeopardizing safety
  6. the importance of only applying stunt wear that you have been trained to apply
  7. the costume requirements of the design brief
  8. the double / triple costumes or items required
  9. the size of the double in comparison to the size of the performer
  10. common costume difficulties and potential solutions
  11. the appropriate action in the event that costumes are damaged
  12. dressing and removal requirements of costumes
  13. techniques to conceal stunt wear and accessories
  14. time constraints of the production schedule
  15. the number of costume changes and accessories required
  16. potential costume damage that may occur during stunts
  17. production staff and departments involved and the communication protocol
  18. statutory responsibilities under health and safety legislation
