Overview

 

This standard is about your ability to assist with costume continuity and ensure consistent continuity is maintained on set.

This may involve ensuring costumes match the design specification throughout the shoot, ensuring that performers’ dress matches the previous sequential take, agreeing alterations due to unscripted events during shooting, ensuring minimal interruptions to the production schedule and keeping accurate continuity records

This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume stand bys and wardrobe/ costume assistants.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. check performers’ dress against the costume breakdown
  2. ensure that the performers’ dress at the commencement of shooting meets the design brief and matches the previous sequential take
  3. ensure that the performers’ dress at the end of shooting meets the design brief
  4. pay attention to costume detail and correct if required
  5. agree changes when alterations are required as a result of unscripted events during the shoot
  6. consult with the relevant person(s) as to the appropriate resources and equipment to record continuity
  7. minimise disruption to the production schedule when dressing or re-dressing performers for continuity
  8. ensure on-set etiquette when maintaining continuity
  9. gather information for continuity record purposes without intrusion, obtaining details from reliable sources where it was not possible to be present at the take
  10. record relevant costume details using digital resources where possible
  11. consult with the supervisor on appropriate action to take when special effects raise health and safety issues
  12. follow confidentiality rules and procedures
  13. keep complete, up-to-date, accurate and accessible records of costume continuity details
  14. communicate with production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
  15. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the costume requirements of the design brief
  2. how to check performers’ dress against the brief
  3. on-set etiquette
  4. who is the relevant person to check continuity maintenance and / or agree costume changes with
  5. how to monitor script changes and assess the impact that this might have upon costume requirements
  6. methods for the recording and storage of continuity information
  7. how to take photographs or video that record costume detail
  8. access requirements to the continuity records
  9. confidentiality rules and procedure
  10. communication protocol
  11. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
