Overview

This standard is about presenting and finalising the costume design and plan the production of costume within budget

This may involve presenting the proposed costume design to the production team, negotiating and agreeing a budget, planning the sourcing and production of the costume design, identifying suppliers /manufacturers, liaising with production colleagues to resolve problems and completing the costume design to schedule.

This standard may be applicable for costume designers, costume managers and costume managers.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

 

  1. interpret the production script and identify the scale, type, characters and overall visual style of the production
  2. assess the creative and technical requirements needed to produce the costume design  
  3. design costumes to meet the production requirements
  4. negotiate and agree costume design, budget and schedule
  5. plan the costume design making process
  6. identify and confirm the number of multiple costumes
  7. classify the quantity and types of raw materials required to produce the design
  8. confirm skills and resources required to produce the design
  9. identify the location and availability of the facilities required
  10. oversee and monitor the design production progress against the schedule and budget
  11. negotiate and agree schedule changes with other relevant departments
  12. identify and confirm stuntwear requirements
  13. communicate with the production team and all relevant department/individuals
  14. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

 

  1. the storyline and content of the script
  2. the visual style, type and scale of the production
  3. production schedules and related time constraints
  4. the affect the storyline/production activity will have on costumes
  5. budgetary limitations
  6. design requirements and constraints
  7. continuity requirements
  8. how to plan both long term and day to day design schedules
  9. stunt wear requirements and application
  10. the resources required for costume manufacture
  11. multiple costume requirements
  12. costume manufacturing processes
  13. the schedule and requirements of other departments within the production
  14. the relevant person(s) with whom you should agree changes to the design schedule
  15. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  16. all departments /personal involved in the production and the communication protocol
