Overview

 

This standard is about your ability to manage and organise costumes for a production and to work in collaboration with the production team to fulfill the production requirements within schedule

It involve identifying required costumes in line with the design brief, breaking down a script and analysing costume requirements, managing a costume budget, sourcing costumes and negotiating alternatives, managing resources and keeping records and documents.

This standard may be applicable to costume/ wardrobe supervisors and managers.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. interpret the design brief /script breakdown
  2. discuss and agree the costume requirements
  3. identify and confirm the costume budget, terms and conditions
  4. negotiate and agree costume options
  5. confirm that selected costumes accurately reflect the design brief
  6. source costumes required for the production i.e stocked, hired or made for the production
  7. ensure costumes are available in line with the proposed
  8. ensure costume costs are within the agreed budget
  9. ensure proposed costume amendments, repairs or improvements are permitted and undertaken
  10. communicate and work with the production team and other relevant departments or individuals
  11. communicate and confirm delivery dates, delivery details and packing requirements
  12. plan and organise the packing, transport and delivery of costume
  13. handle and store hazardous materials in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements
  14. communicate across production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
  15. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the design brief and script interpretation
  2. budget management and required calculations
  3. costume schedule and the number of costume changes required
  4. the time period/genre in which the production is set
  5. the overall look and style of the production including key looks/trends
  6. the production venue and facilities
  7. the quantity and quality of costumes required
  8. factors about the performers and characters which will impact on costume selection including, physical activities that will be undertaken, the size and cut of costumes required and the means of portraying the character through use of costume
  9. costumes in stock that are available for use and the booking out procedures
  10. external sources of costumes and materials
  11. alternative costumes and / or methods of design where chosen designs are impractical or too expensive
  12. multiple costumes required and related costs
  13. terms and conditions for the provision of costumes
  14. logistics, distribution and delivery processes
  15. costume tracking and records required
  16. legislative and regulatory requirements applicable to handing and storing hazardous materials
  17. all departments /personal involved in the production and the communication protocol
  18. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
