Overview 

This standard is about your ability to prepare costumes for performers, organise costumes and coordinate accessories to schedule and meet production requirements

It involves preparing costumes according to the production schedule, assembling and laying out costumes for performers, identifying and labelling costumes, communicating costume availability and maintaining costumes.

This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume stand bys, wardrobe assistants and dressers.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to: 

  1. clarify and agree the costume requirements and production schedule
  2. select the costumes and accessories according to the production information
  3. confirm costumes and accessories are correct and, in a condition, appropriate to production requirements
  4. obtain permission from the relevant person(s) prior to taking the required costumes
  5. coordinate costumes in line with the production schedule / scene order/call sheet
  6. inform the relevant person immediately when costumes are not available or in an unacceptable condition
  7. label costumes and organise costume access in a way that will minimise dressing time, activity and confusion
  8. carry out costume mending and general care activities
  9. follow COSH regulations when using hazardous substances i.e., breakdown sprays, alcohol, starches or aerosols
  10. ensure items to assist the dressing, mending and general care of costume are available
  11. ensure costumes are stored safely and securely and advise performers of any irregularities
  12. pack and prepare costumes for safe and secure transfer when required
  13. communicate with production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
  14. follow health and safety legislation and guidelines at all times

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. where to obtain production and costume information
  2. the schedule relating to costume requirements
  3. how to interpret and follow the production information /call sheet/ shooting order relating to costume requirements
  4. factors that might intrude or disrupt performers and how to avoid them K5  how to ensure costumes are safe and secure
  5. basic sewing procedures and garment construction
  6. how to prepare costumes for transport
  7. how to store, care for and maintain costumes
  8. all departments /personal involved in the production and the communication protocol
  9. statutory responsibilities under health, safety, COSH and environmental legislation and regulations
