Overview 

This standard is about interpreting the brief to carry out an editing project. You will also need to understand your role on each production and how it relates to other roles and departments. It also includes understanding the technical requirements of your work.

This standard is for the following job roles: editor, assistant editor, senior editor, junior editor.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. interpret the brief and confirm with the relevant people the work that is required of you
  2. research and obtain the information you need to carry out work effectively
  3. negotiate a realistic schedule and time within budget for the edit that balances the needs of the client with time to produce work of the appropriate quality
  4. communicate any issues with progress, quality or work methods that impact on workflow and enables others resolve problems
  5. manage own workload and ensure that agreed deadlines are met
  6. work in an organised way so that others can access your work when necessary
  7. operate systems and equipment, solving any day to day problems that may occur
  8. solve problems, explain limitations and find ways around issues with given media
  9. consider and suggest viable alternatives to improve the edit
  10. act on feedback, identifying how to make changes required and accepting creative decisions of others
  11. provide details about copyright of images or sound to the relevant people
  12. deliver the edited content to brief

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to interpret a brief
  2. the editing styles for different genres
  3. how to manage your time to meet production schedule
  4. where in the post production workflow you are and the impact on others in the process
  5. the responsibilities of your own role and how your work relates to and impacts on the work of others
  6. the different functions in the productions you work on, and who you need to liaise with about aspects of your work
  7. who makes editorial decisions and how to maintain relationships with them
  8. how to communicate effectively and get your views across
  9. how to remain motivated after receiving feedback
  10. how to interpret technical deliverable standards required to meet the brief
  11. how to problem solve when editing content
  12. how to comply with laws and regulations that apply to content and editorial guidelines
