SKSL12 Coordinate lighting production liaison

Overview 

This standard is about communicating and working with colleagues such as the Director of Photography before and during shooting. It also covers discussing and agreeing lighting requirements, communicating these to the team and putting forward positive solutions to problems that may crop up during shooting.

This standard also covers attending meetings to ensure the electrical requirements are accounted for, and that any change and their implications for lighting are considered.

This standard is for those working as Gaffers.

 

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:

  1. discuss the lighting and electrical requirements with the relevant persons and the Director of Photography or similar persons before and during shooting
  2. ensure your role is covered by the Best Boy, or nominated colleague at times when you are not available
  3. put forward positive suggestions for solutions to a lighting and electrical discussion with the Director of Photography and others
  4. ensure that your suggestions are technically feasible and comply with health and safety requirements
  5. ensure that your input meets the requirements of the Director of Photography and come within the lighting budget, and that electrical equipment and expertise is available to carry out such suggestions
  6. attend production meetings to ensure the lighting and electrical requirements are discussed and agreed upon
  7. record decisions and ensure that any changes to the schedule and equipment requirements are passed on to the Best Boy, production and lighting
  8. consult with the production team for suggestions to solve problems

 

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the scope, type and deadlines for the production
  2. the lighting and electrical requirements of the production
  3. the creative approach required by the Director of Photography or similar for the production
  4. types of solutions to recommend that match the available equipment and expertise
  5. the importance of liaising with others, such as the Best Boy, about changes and outcomes of production meetings
  6. the importance of providing cover when you are not available and ensuring that those who take on such responsibilities know the limits of their responsibilities
  7. the importance of complying with health and safety requirements
  8. the importance of record keeping
  9. the benefits of involving the production team in discussing solutions to problems
