This standard is about checking practical equipment against the lighting list, installing fixtures and fittings, and installing props equipment for the shoot. This standard also covers assessing lighting requirements, identifying the power requirements, and installing and testing fluorescent lighting.
This standard is for those working as Lighting technicians, Best Boys and Gaffers.
This standard covers the knowledge of and operating within the electrical standards and approved codes of practice with codes BS7671 and BS7909.
Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
co-ordinate and confirm lighting requirements with the person responsible, prior to commencing with the installation
assess and agree with the responsible person that the equipment is fit for purpose and safe for use
ensure that the equipment meets insulation resistance and loading requirements
ensure that the equipment is electrically protected, earthed and fused
test the equipment and installation for electrical and operational safety prior to use
assess and meet the power requirements for the installation
assess the power and compatibility of the different types of fluorescent ballasts in use
identify potential hazards, and report these to the person in charge
install fixtures and fittings, and ensure that they meet health and safety requirements
find and remedy faults with the lighting equipment and installation
power up the equipment prior to use to ensure that it meets the production's requirements
use all practical fittings and fixings at the correct design ratings
utilise wiring systems for all types of neon and fluorescent tubes
identify and label any non-standard voltages
operate the equipment / installation
instruct others in the safe use of any equipment
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
the relevant health and safety regulations
the relevant electrical standards and codes of practice and how to apply these
the importance of planning practical wiring and systems to take account of phasing and loading
how to leave enough scope for adjustment to the practical equipment once fitted
the importance of knowing which cable and connectors are suitable for the use required
the differences between series and parallel wiring, and how to use fusing, the use of circuit breakers, and when to use Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
how to check that the intended property department equipment is compatible with the available electrical supply, and that it will function as intended
when and how to test equipment and installation to comply with regulations
how to identify, prior to use, that old equipment required for use can be made to conform with the relevant electrical standards and codes of practice
the implications of power factor correction particularly fluorescent lighting
how to fit and use lighting, including fluorescent lighting and starting systems
how to find and remedy any faults with the equipment and installation
how to use specialty lighting e.g. neon, LED, laser and starting systems
how to use extra low voltages up to 50VAC or 110VDC
how to provide protection for the sub-circuit connection
how to restore equipment to its original specification after use
the importance of ensuring that the installation represents no danger to the crew or performers
how to instruct others in the safe use of the equipment when performers or unqualified personnel are expected to operate it
