SKSL5 Prepare battery lighting equipment and systems
Overview
This standard is about recognising the differences between AC and DC lighting, preparing batteries and chargers and working with the battery lighting equipment.
This standard is also about the selection of different types of batteries and the use and safe storage of these.
This standard is for those working as Lighting technicians, Best Boys and Gaffers.
Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
follow health and safety legislation including guidance on safe working practices covering the use of personal protective equipment
calculate current flow in DC circuits
ensure that exposed terminals to connectors do not become a safety hazard
check the wiring integrity on battery belts
connect inverters safely to battery systems
estimate the useful life of a fully charged battery subject to load
mark and label batteries according to their charge state
label and store batteries in accordance with relevant organisational procedures and regulations
transport batteries following organizational procedures
ensure that all batteries are charged in rotation, and are marked correctly when provided
check that batteries are safe to use and are operated safely
test the emergency system relating to lighting equipment following organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
health and safety legislation and how these affect your work and safety practices including the use of personal protective equipment
the difference between AC and DC power systems
the difference between series and parallel charging
the dangers and restrictions in the use of battery supplies including charging
the charging parameters and limitations as applied to lead acid, nickel- cadmium, and lithium battery supplies; and their ratings
the problems that can arise from the misuse of, or incorrect, polarity
how to deal with battery acid spills, and what remedial action must be taken
how to transport and store batteries safely
how to carry out mandatory labelling of batteries and why
the safe methods for the disposal of batteries and requirements according to the organisation’s environmental policies and procedures
the importance of ensuring that that batteries get charged in rotation and how to carry out the process
how to advise any personnel on the safe use of battery equipment
the importance of and the process of testing the emergency system
