Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
set up and adjust lighting equipment to the requirements and instructions of the person responsible for the lighting
adapt the lighting effects prior to the shoot until all the relevant parties are satisfied with the effects created
cut filters to the required sizes
check and record what filter and correction filter are installed
attach the required filters and filter frames and other accessories
determine where and when heat resistant filters should be used, and where they would be most effective
set and position flags to achieve the desired effect
assemble and use large frames and their stands, reflectors or diffusers
identify and replace inoperative equipment with minimal disruption to the production
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
how lighting effects equipment should be used following health and safety regulations and industry best practice
the types of lighting effects available, when to use them, and the methods of achieving them
the range of available filters and scrims and their different effects such as diffusion, correction, colour and temperature control
the characteristics of fire-retardant filters, relevant regulations in use for these and how these affect their use
how to identify faults or problems with lighting equipment, and how to resolve them
how to produce hard shadows and soft shadows using flags or gobos
how to secure and position frames under different conditions with due regard to the safety of yourself and others
safe methods of fixing or supporting stands, and who to contact for assistance
what to do in the event of equipment failure
the importance of minimal disruption to the production when replacing faulty equipment
