SKSDT2 Review and store recorded media for productions

Overview 

This Standard involves reviewing and storing recorded media for productions.  This could apply to any type of production including feature films, TV dramas, commercials, documentaries, sports coverage, outside broadcast and live or stage events. 

This includes verifying the condition of recorded media, giving feedback on quality of media, processing data, pre-empting technical problems, backing up and archiving recorded media and packing up and storing kit and equipment.

This standard is for digital imaging technicians (DITs) working on productions.

 

Performance Criteia 

You must be able to:

  1. use appropriate software to verify there is no damage or corruption to recorded media
  2. back up recorded media to required destinations
  3. protect media from environmental factors which may have a negative impact on data recording or storage
  4. offer feedback on quality of data to appropriate people in camera and production departments when required
  5. process data in line with digital negative report sheets
  6. deliver data in suitable formats
  7. liaise with appropriate people in sound departments to ensure integration with camera
  8. inform appropriate people of problems without delay
  9. consult with relevant people to check that equipment has been safely connected to appropriate power sources
  10. observe standard set etiquette and agreed working practices at all times
  11. work in colour critical environments appropriate for the work
  12. obtain optimal images from camera systems
  13. archive data to meet production requirements
  14. confirm that appropriate connections and upload and download speeds are available to store material
  15. offer viable technical solutions to any data or format issues which may arise on set
  16. make sure all media is transported at the end of each shooting day in line with security requirements
  17. disassemble kit and equipment in line with safety procedures and manufacturers instructions
  18. pack and store kit and equipment in a secure environment when not in use
  19. work in line with follow health and safety legislation, risk assessments and other instructions for safe methods of working relating to the safe movement of camera equipment

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to back up data to multiple destinations and be able to review and verify it
  2. how to review data to ensure that there has been no damage or corruption
  3. environmental factors which could affect recording media
  4. how to provide weather cover for different shooting environments
  5. how to carry out visual verification of material
  6. how to pre-empt technical problems
  7. how to offer feedback in a professional and diplomatic way
  8. how to read and process data according to instructions on a digital negative report sheet
  9. the differences between camera formats and the technical limitations and advantages and disadvantages of each
  10. how to transcode and deliver data in different forms
  11. software packages to execute data processing
  12. how to integrate successfully into camera departments
  13. how to achieve integration with sound and camera
  14. who to liaise with when there is a problem and the manner in which to do so
  15. how to identify power sources and who in electrical departments can help with this
  16. how black out tents create colour critical environments
  17. different colour spaces in relation to both camera and post production viewing and their impact on set, the edit , monitoring and final delivery
  18. how to use look up tables (LUTs)
  19. how to ensure accuracy and consistency with expectations of post production
  20. colour theory and grading in relation to obtaining optimal images
  21. how to archive effectively and appropriate tools to do this with
  22. different download speeds and necessary connections and demands of storage requirements
  23. how to ensure that all media is transported in an appropriate way at the end of each shooting day
  24. how to disassemble and store kit and equipment
  25. good working practices and expected set etiquette
  26. how to work in a safe manner, paying attention to posture, preserving eye sight and lifting heavy equipment
  27. the health and safety guidelines for working with electronic equipment on location or in a studio environment
