SKSCCL4 Assist camera operators during line up and rehearsal
Overview
This Standard is about assisting camera operators during line up and rehearsal. This could apply to any type of production including feature films, TV dramas, commercials, documentaries, sports coverage, outside broadcast and live or stage events.
This includes selecting and preparing lenses, recording mark-up requirements, setting focus and call marks and explaining colour coding systems to actors.
This Standard is relevant to those responsible for assisting camera operators during line up and rehearsal including those working as 2nd assistants or clapper loaders.
Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
check that sufficient supplies of appropriate lenses are available
prepare selected lenses for use in line with production requirements
supply prepared lenses to appropriate people when they are required
record marking up requirements in appropriate formats
mark up actor and camera positions using appropriate colour-coding systems
set focus and call marks in line with production requirements
explain colour-coding systems to actors at appropriate times
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
key characteristics of current cameras, lenses and attachments and major obsolescent models
camera handling techniques and the implications of damage to cameras
cleaning and maintenance procedures and products for the camera equipment in use including cleanliness of all glass surfaces
who to assist and when to help them
how to check supplies of lenses
how to interpret requirements for lens preparation
how to record marking up requirements
the benefits of laying focus marks and call marks for others
how to interpret requirements for focus and call marks from rehearsal
industry accepted colour coding systems for focus and call marks
the role of others involved and when to liaise with them including camera operators, and 1st camera assistants or focus pullers
any special requirements to ensure the safety and security of equipment when left unattended
relevant manufacturers’ instructions for the equipment in use
the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures
