SKSC5 Coordinate crew to position cameras

Overview 

This Standard is about coordinating crew to position cameras to meet production needs.  This includes dealing with timing, and the path cameras will take.  This could apply to any type of production including feature films, TV dramas, commercials, documentaries, sports coverage, outside broadcast and live or stage events. 

This includes interpreting requirements of shots, interpreting requirements for camera for each camera operator, complying with safety requirements, communicating with crew and others affected and resolving problems.

This standard is for Camera Operators and anyone else who coordinates crew to position cameras.

 

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow health and safety legislation, risk assessments and other instructions for safe methods of working relating to the safe movement of camera equipment
  2. ensure that any required safety certificates or risk assessments are available, current and have been checked
  3. interpret requirements of shots into discrete instructions for different operators involved
  4. communicate clear information to crew about camera positions, routes and timings of moves
  5. check that crew make notes and appropriate marks to ensure accurate recreation of rehearsed shots
  6. make sure crew are provided with adequate communication facilities which are appropriate to productions and equipment being used
  7. discuss routes and timings of camera moves with all people who may be affected
  8. supervise moving of cameras at a pace that is appropriate to the mood and duration of shots, taking into account any artistes’ movement, musical tempo, or other performance related motivation
  9. discuss problems with appropriate people without delay
  10. modify movements as agreed to rectify problems 

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the relevant Health and Safety legislation, industry guidelines, and any other instructions for the camera equipment in use, and how to observe safe methods of working
  2. how to confirm the existence and validity of safety certificates and risk assessments
  3. what risk assessments cover and what is involved in carrying them out
  4. how to acknowledge the responsibilities of any staff supplied with equipment by its owner, whilst assuming overall responsibility for its safe use
  5. the requirements for correct positioning of cameras
  6. the different camera crew roles and their inter-relationships
  7. how to allocate responsibilities to available personnel
  8. how to communicate with and co-ordinate crew
  9. industry accepted marks for recording the movement and positioning of cameras
  10. how to identify who may be affected by camera movements
  11. who to discuss problems with
  12. what problems may occur, and how to modify operations to deal with them
