Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
check that all required lenses, filters and accessories are available and in the required condition
mount camera bodies on appropriate heads in line with production requirements
level cameras through 360 degrees
check that all pan and tilt locks are secure
assemble camera body components in required configurations
secure lenses in mounts in line with manufacturers’ instructions, fitting supports when required
assemble mechanical and electrical attachments in line with production requirements
ensure that camera heads balance once lenses and accessories have been attached
position cameras and mounts in appropriate positions for shooting
adjust apertures and shutter angles to specified settings
report any problems to relevant people and suggest suitable solutions
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
key characteristics of current cameras, lenses and attachments and major obsolescent models
camera handling techniques and the implications of damage to cameras
cleaning and maintenance procedures and products for the camera equipment in use including cleanliness of all glass surfaces
how to check the required condition of lenses and filters including that they are clean and scratch free and that irises function
how to assemble camera body components including the use of steadicam for hand held mode
how to secure lenses without damaging rims
mechanical and electrical attachments including focus and zoom motors
how to attach matte boxes without causing vignetting
how to attach filters in the correct alignment
how to tactfully suggest solutions to any problems or restrictions
the role of others involved and when to liaise with them including directors of photography, camera operators, directors and 2nd camera assistants
how to store cameras and lenses safely and securely
any special requirements to ensure the safety and security of equipment when left unattended
relevant manufacturers’ instructions for the equipment in use
the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures
