Overview

This standard is about the principles of food policy and regulation. It is about understanding the importance and influence of food policy and regulation in food and drink.

This standard applies to you if you are a manager or consultant who has responsibility for strategic policy development within a food and drink business, where you are expected to ensure compliance with the regulatory framework and commercial standards through the development and application of organisational policy. It is expected that you will control and support others with regard to the development and implementation of organisational policy.

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

2 the relevant legal and regulatory requirements that control food manufacture and supply, including your responsibilities in relationship to HACCP, TACCP and VACCP and audit standards, including British Retail Consortium

3 how ethical, social and environmental requirements impact on food businesses

4 how to access sources of advice and guidance in support of food policy development

5 how to quantify the impact of legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements on a food business

6 methods for collecting and analysing data relevant to food policy development

7 the culture and values of your business and what effect these have on corporate governance

8 how to develop organisational policy in support of organisational culture and values

9 how to support the implementation of policies

10 how organisational policy is influenced by and influences stakeholders

11 how to engage with colleagues through a range of listening and communication techniques

12 methods for communicating policies with stakeholders

13 techniques for monitoring the way policies and procedures are put into practice

14 how to support others with the implementation of policy

15 how to develop contingency processes for dealing with policy failures

16 how quality assurance processes are needed to support organisational policy development and implementation

17 methods for controlling policy and ensuring on-going compliance with regulations
