IMPDT31 – Carry out cask filling in the spirits industry
Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to fill casks. It can apply to the control of semi-automatic or manual filling processes.
This will include the preparation and filling of casks in accordance with organisational requirements and can involve equipment including cask filler and heads/nozzles.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. carry out cask filling in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
2. use personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer’s instructions
3. obtain relevant operational instructions and confirm that information received on the current operational status meets organisational requirements
4. carry out checking procedures and take relevant action within limits of your authority
5. confirm the product, equipment and services are available and suitable for use
6. prepare casks for filling in accordance with organisational procedures
7. start up the filling process to organisational specification and check that it is working
8. carry out sample checks in accordance with organisational specification
9. monitor the filling process and cask integrity in accordance with organisational specification
10. seal and label the filled casks in accordance with organisational procedures
11. deal with loss or spillage according to organisational specification
12. finish the filling process according to organisational requirements
13. identify and take relevant action to deal with faults and any operational issues
14. dispose of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
15. communicate with relevant colleagues when carrying out cask filling in accordance with organisational requirements throughout the process
16. complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures

3. the protective and handling equipment required for filling casks

7. the need for checking procedures and what may happen if they are not followed
8. the effect of equipment and services not performing to organisational specification or economic use and the remedial action to be taken
9. the effect of the filling operation not performing to organisational specification or economic use and the remedial action to be taken
10. the importance of quality procedures and what may happen if they are not carried out in accordance with organisational requirements
11. when personal protective equipment is required, how it is used, and what may happen if it is not used
12. the importance of the disposal of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
13. why it is important to keep records and what might happen if this is not done
14. what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done
15. the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
