IMPDT11 – Contribute to environmental sustainability in the spirits industry

 

Overview

This standard covers contributing to environmental sustainability in day to day work activities, through minimising damage and loss and using resources responsibly, as well as dealing with risks or potential risks arising from incidents.

It covers both working in ways which support environmental safety and dealing with risks arising from potential environmental incidents.

You must have an awareness of the environmental policies and targets of your business, understand the risks associated with working in the spirits industry and have an understanding of minimum legal requirements.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1.            contribute to environmental sustainability, in accordance with your organisational policies and targets, by following environmentally safe working practices and taking precautions to minimise environmental damage

2.            use personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer’s instructions

3.            identify incidental damage following standard operating procedures

4.            minimise any incidental damage

5.            follow shutdown and evacuation procedures when dealing with risks arising from potential environmental incidents

6.            use equipment to deal with environmental incidents in accordance with organisational procedures

7.            report environmental incidents and actions taken following standard operating procedures

8.            dispose of waste materials in accordance with organisational procedures

9.            communicate with relevant colleagues while contributing to environmental sustainability in accordance with organisational requirements

10.          complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand

1.            how to contribute to environmental sustainability in accordance with organisational policies and targets

2.            why it is important to protect the environment during spirits industry operations

3.            the different types of environmental damage

4.            the types of operating problems that can occur, the impact these can have on the environment, and what corrective actions can be taken

5.            the impact of waste, water and energy emissions on the environment

6.            the different methods used to minimise environmental damage

7.            the requirements for environmental monitoring

8.            how to choose suitable materials and equipment, given the nature of the work activity, and its potential impact on the environment

9.            the relevant organisational and legislative requirements relating to environmental limits, targets and damage

10.          what the organisational instructions are for emergency procedures, how to follow them and why it is important to do so

11.          what emergency equipment and personal protective equipment to use and how to use it safely

12.          the procedures for reporting environmental incidents

13.          how to dispose of waste materials safely and the consequences of not doing so

14.          the types of recyclables in use in the organisation and how to deal with them

15.          why it is important to keep records and what might happen if this is not done

16.          what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done

17.          the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
