Overview

The standard covers the skills and knowledge required to complete lined curtains with heading tape, mitres, hand stitching and pattern matching

This includes:

•             producing precise mitred corners

•             positioning and securing weights

•             positioning and securing lining

•             applying hand-stitching techniques

•             producing pattern match samples

 

The standard is aimed at those working in soft furnishings.

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:      

1.            comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times

2.            obtain specifications and requirements of the items to be produced following standard operating procedures

3.            carry out your work to the required quality and output to meet production schedules and targets

4.            select fabrics for curtain construction to meet specifications

5.            select curtain linings to meet specifications

6.            evaluate materials for their suitability for use in the construction of pattern match curtains

7.            evaluate patterns on fabric in order to provide the appropriate positioning on a finished curtain

8.            sew multiple widths of fabric in the same direction to meet specifications

9.            construct curtains using exact measurements and methods

10.          apply stitched, tension and method of machine finishes to the sections of curtains following standard operating procedures

11.          construct true mitred corners using precise measurements to meet specifications

12.          cover weights following standard operating procedures

13.          position and secure weights to curtain corners and seams following standard operating procedures

14.          position and secure lining with interlocking stitched positioned following standard operating procedures

15.          construct hems without visible disturbance to the front of curtains following standard operating procedures

16.          check there is no visible disturbance to the front of fabrics 

17.          apply slipstitching following standard operating procedures

18.          apply ladder stitching to mitred corners following standard operating procedures

19.          apply herringbone stitching following standard operating procedures

20.          finish all stitching to meet specifications

21.          pattern match fabrics following standard operating procedures

22.          secure heading tapes to main fabrics to meet specifications

23.          secure draw strings under the end of the tape leaving the opposite end free to gather up the curtain

24.          stitch through layers of fabric without causing disturbance to quality and finish of fabrics

25.          press fabric seams using the appropriate iron temperature for fabrics

26.          carry out your work to the required quality and output to meet production schedules and targets

27.          identify any problems and deal with them according to standard operating procedures

28.          record information in the appropriate information systems
