Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to maintain tools and equipment.

It covers:

1.            carrying out routine maintenance

2.            checking the condition of tools and equipment

3.            arranging for repair or replacement when required

4.            working in ways which maintain your own safety and that of others

It is about maintaining the tools or equipment such as power tools and hand tools.

 

Outcomes

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:      

1.            comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times

2.            check tools and equipment are in working order on a regular basis

3.            oil and grease tools and equipment to prevent them being damaged and to maintain their effectiveness

4.            keep tools and equipment clean and free from dust and debris

5.            test the condition of tools and equipment so they are appropriate for use

6.            identify components, tools and equipment that are damaged and remove them for repair

7.            identify any components, tools or equipment which are beyond repair

8.            arrange for repair or replacement of faulty tools or equipment following standard operating procedures

9.            check tools and equipment are stored in line with health and safety requirements when not in use

10.          wear the appropriate personal protective equipment for the work you are carrying out

You need to know and understand:

1.            standard operating procedures and how to apply these

2.            relevant health and safety responsibilities

3.            tools and equipment used

4.            what to look for when checking the condition of tools or equipment, the implications of not keeping tools or equipment maintained and free of dust and debris and what needs to be done to bring them into a working state

5.            hazards that can arise from defective and faulty tools or equipment

6.            how often to oil and grease tools and equipment and what types of oils or greases to use

7.            how to calculate the consumption of materials and components to maintain stock levels

8.            why it is important to store tools and equipment properly

9.            how to test tools or equipment for performance accuracy

10.          damage that can occur and how to recognise including damage that can be repaired as well as damage that cannot be repaired

11.          how to arrange for repair or replacement
