PROFFI245 - Survey a location for the placement of furniture components
Overview
This standard addresses the competence required to assess, measure and record relevant information for the fitting and fixing of furniture components.
This involves taking measurements and other relevant data of the location, sketching elevation and plan views and working in ways which maintain your own and others’ safety.
Outcomes
Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
1. check that you have the required tools, equipment and materials to achieve the specification
2. determine working space and/or safety parameters required by existing opening components which may include doors, windows, drawers and appliances
3. carry out suitable checks to confirm accuracy of measurements
4. determine the materials used in the construction of structural components as appropriate to the placement requirements of the installations
5. determine the condition of the walls, floors, ceilings and components as appropriate to the placement requirements of installations
6. seek expert assistance on any aspects of the information you obtain which requires clarification
7. determine and record site access conditions to ensure successful delivery and placement of furniture, fixtures and fittings
8. determine and record site conditions to ensure disposal of waste in accordance with current legislation
9. determine and record site conditions so that the provision of suitable and adequate working space for placements can be arranged
10. determine and record site conditions so that adequate storage of furniture components, fixtures and fittings for the placement can be arranged
11. comply with current health and safety legislation
12. produce a representational image which records the appropriate and accurate measurements of the location for the placement of furniture components
13. record the working space and/or safety parameters required by existing opening or moving components which may include doors, windows, drawers and appliances
14. record structural components to which the furniture component will be fixed to
15. record relevant potential problems associated with designs and installations
Knowledge & Understanding
You need to know and understand:
1. why it is important to ensure that measuring tools and equipment produce accurate recordings
2. how to care for measuring equipment and tools
3. location features likely to determine critical points of measurement
4. how uneven structural components/surfaces might affect the points of measurement
5. how to identify which existing opening or moving components are likely to impact upon the final design
6. ways of determining the type of structural components to enable the placement of the furniture component
7. when the poor condition of a structural component may affect the placement of the furniture component
8. features of a location that might affect access and storage of furniture components
9. your personal responsibilities towards health and safety whilst carrying out a survey
10. how to keep sketches in proportion
11. features shown on plan views and elevations
12. the importance of referencing records/sketches: title, job number, revision number
13. symbols, shading, hatching, abbreviations conventions used by the organisation within specifications to convey information on components and materials
14. the importance of accurate, unambiguous detailing and recording
15. why it is necessary to record the space taken up by some existing opening or moving components such as windows, doors or drawers
16. ways of recording types of structural components to enable placement of the furniture components
17. how to record/highlight the poor condition of a structural components which may affect the placement of furniture components
18. how to record/highlight features of a location which might affect access and storage of furniture components
19. features of a location that might affect working space and the disposal of waste during the placement of furniture components
