Overview 

This standard is about responding to incidents and emergencies.  These could include fire, acts of terrorism, suspicious packages, suspicious behaviour, security breaches, illness or injury. 

You will need to be proactive in identifying when there is an incident or emergency and directing members of the public and staff in line with the appropriate procedures. 

This standard is for anyone who is involved in responding to incidents and emergencies.

 

Performance Criteria

You must be able to do:

  1. make an initial response to incidents and emergencies in line with organisational procedures
  2. obtain all available information about incidents or emergencies that are occurring without delay
  3. communicate with all those involved in incidents or emergencies in a way that is appropriate to the situation
  4. take appropriate and prompt action in line with organisational procedures to prevent situations from escalating
  5. report incidents and emergencies in a clear and accurate way to appropriate colleagues
  6. hand over control to appropriate colleagues when required
  7. carry out your own responsibilities in a safe, effective and efficient way in line with organisational security procedures
  8. deal with bystanders with organisational procedures
  9. maintain the rights of individuals involved in line with organisational security procedures
  10. implement contingency plans in line with organisational security procedures
  11. record and report information about incidents or emergencies that could be used for future action in line with organisational security procedures
  12. ensure instructions and requests to others are in line with organisational procedures

 

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the types of incidents and emergencies that may occur including fire, acts of terrorism, suspicious packages, suspicious behaviour, security breaches, illness or injury
  2. organisational procedures you should follow when making an initial response
  3. how to identify when an incident or emergency is happening or about to happen
  4. the importance of communicating clearly and accurately, and of following organisational procedures when responding to an incident or emergency
  5. organisational procedures and protocols for reporting incidents or emergencies at an early stage
  6. organisational procedures and protocols for controlling different types of incident and emergency
  7. the importance of effective team work in an emergency situation
  8. your role and responsibilities in controlling an incident or emergency, and what roles other staff will play
  9. procedures for using force in an incident or emergency and the importance of only using reasonable force
  10. communication methods and techniques
  11. agreed contingency plans for a range of incidents and emergencies and your role in these
