CCSTTL35 Ensure the safe and efficient loading and unloading of vehicles

Overview

This Standard is about planning and carrying out the loading and unloading of vehicles. Loads could comprise tools, equipment, materials or other items. It involves following manual handling and other health and safety requirements, ensuring loads are secured and working in line with agreed procedures.

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:

  1. use reliable information to confirm that vehicles and loads are compatible before loading
  2. check with appropriate people that vehicles are ready for loading and unloading
  3. ensure that loading and unloading area is suitable and safe in line with health and safety requirements
  4. use Personal Protective Equipment that is appropriate for loading and unloading activities
  5. communicate with others in accordance with workplace procedures when loading and unloading
  6. follow instructions from appointed people for loading, unloading and dispersal requirements
  7. take action to address problems with loading or unloading in line with agreed procedures
  8. ensure vehicles are loaded in ways appropriate to items being loaded
  9. use approved manual handling techniques and assisting devices when required
  10. ensure that handling, packing and securing methods are appropriate to loads
  11. use appropriate devices and equipment to restrain loads
  12. secure loose materials, restraints and ancillary equipment using appropriate devices and equipment
  13. work in line with relevant health and safety statutory requirement
  14. follow approved procedures and practices in the context of the work and workplace

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. why the supplied vehicle may be unsuitable for the load
  2. the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
  3. the importance of communicating effectively with others
  4. sources of information on loading, unloading and dispersal requirements
  5. how to prepare vehicles for loading and unloading
  6. people appointed to give instructions on load distribution
  7. methods for handling and dispersing of different types of load
  8. when to re-distribute loads and how to do so
  9. how to ensure load are secure and stable so that they cannot shift or become loose during transportation
  10. types of problem that can occur if loose materials, restraints and ancillary equipment are not secured
  11. relevant health and safety statutory requirements for loading and unloading vehicles
  12. approved procedures and practices in the context of the work and workplace
