EUSWT04 Maintain plant and apparatus in the electricity power utilities environment

Overview

This standard is about maintaining electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic plant and apparatus in an electricity power utility environment. It includes the processes and procedures to be followed to make sure that the completed maintenance work meets the quality assurance and operating specifications set by your organisation.

Meeting this standard will involve you demonstrating you can:

  • follow the processes and procedures in line with your organisation’s quality assurance and operating specifications
  • use safe working practices when carrying out your role
  • communicate effectively when carrying out your role

Performance criteria

Plan to maintain plant and apparatus

  1. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with health and safety regulations and environmental legislation throughout the duration of the work
  2. use your organisation’s documentation and work instructions to determine the work location
  3. conduct a site-specific risk assessment in accordance with health and safety regulations
  4. read and interpret your organisation’s work instructions and supporting documentation
  5. determine the content and sequence of tasks needed to complete the work activity
  6. provide the work plan to parties directly and indirectly responsible for completing the work activity
  7. plan and carry out all work in line with your organisation’s policy and work procedures

Prepare to maintain plant and apparatus

  1. carry out pre use checks on tools and equipment to be used to complete the maintenance work in accordance with work instructions and equipment specifications
  2. select and wear required personal protective equipment to complete work activities in accordance with health and safety regulations
  3. Apply and adhere to control measures in accordance with the requirements of the Safe System of Work (SSOW)
  4. locate and establish the plant and equipment to be dismantled in accordance with authorisation procedures

Maintain plant and apparatus

  1. undertake checks and routine activities as part of a planned maintenance programme
  2. determine the defects and measure variations in the performance of equipment against its specification and performance criteria
  3. maintain plant and apparatus in accordance with equipment specification and maintenance procedures
  4. inspect and adjust the finished product for compliance with work instructions and operating specifications
  5. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with health and safety regulations and environmental legislation throughout the duration of the work

Restore and reinstate work location

  1. store tools and equipment on completion of the work activity
  2. dispose of waste materials and hazardous substances
  3. leave the work area in a condition which is in line with good housekeeping practice

Use and communicate data and information

  1. report unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources
  2. maintain documentation and report the completion of work activities in accordance with organisational requirements

Resolve problems effectively and efficiently

  1. deal with any problems within the limits of your job role responsibility
  2. report any problems outside your job role responsibility to designated personnel

Knowledge and understanding

  1. The main principles of health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  2. your organisation’s reporting lines and authorisation roles and responsibilities
  3. your organisation’s policies and procedures that directly impact on the work to be undertaken

  2. the procedures and information sources used to make sure that tools and equipment are fit for purpose and safe to use
  3. what processes and procedures need to be followed and complied with when carrying out a pre-use inspection of tools and equipment, including condition and service information
  4. what personal protective equipment needs to be worn when undertaking work activities
  5. what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health
  6. how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work
  7. how to minimise risks to self and others when undertaking work activities
  8. your organisation’s work instructions, information and reporting systems and documentation
  9. your organisation’s procedures for responding to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur
  10. the specific principles, methods, processes and procedures for maintaining plant and apparatus
  11. What handling techniques and equipment should be adopted and used, in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), when removing plant and apparatus
