EUSWT03 Remove plant and apparatus in the electricity power utilities environment

Overview

This standard is about the removal of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic plant and apparatus in an electricity power utilities environment.

Meeting this standard will involve you demonstrating you can:

  • follow the processes and procedures in line with your organisation’s quality assurance and operating specifications
  • work safely using a range of appropriate tools and equipment
  • wear appropriate personal protective equipment whist carrying out the work

Performance criteria

Plan to remove plant and apparatus

  1. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with health and safety regulations and environmental legislation throughout the duration of the work
  2. use your organisation’s documentation and work instructions to determine the work location
  3. conduct a site-specific risk assessment in accordance with health and safety regulations
  4. determine the content and sequence of tasks needed to complete the work activity
  5. provide the work plan to parties directly and indirectly responsible for completing the work activity
  6. inspect, prepare and carry out pre use checks on tools and equipment required to complete work activity in accordance with work instructions and equipment specifications
  7. select and wear required personal protective equipment when completing work activities in accordance with health and safety regulations
  8. apply and adhere to control measures in accordance with the requirements of the Safe System of Work (SSOW)
  9. locate and establish the plant and equipment to be removed in accordance with authorisation procedures

Remove plant and apparatus

  1. make sure stored energy is released prior to commencing work to remove plant and apparatus, in alignment with work instructions, specifically by applying safe isolation, prove dead, and de-energizing any hydraulic systems at the point of work
  2. take precautions to prevent damage to plant and apparatus before and during their removal
  3. remove plant and apparatus in accordance with equipment specification and work instructions
  4. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with health and safety regulations and environmental legislation throughout the duration of the work

Restore and reinstate work location

  1. label and store the removed components in the designated location
  2. store tools and equipment on completion of the work activity
  3. dispose of waste materials and hazardous substances
  4. leave the work area in a condition that is in line with good housekeeping practice

Use and communicate data and information

  1. report on unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources in line with your organisation’s reporting procedures
  2. read and interpret your organisation’s work instructions and supporting documentation
  3. maintain documentation and report the completion of work activities in accordance with organisational requirements

Resolve problems effectively and efficiently

  1. deal with any problems within the limits of your job role responsibility
  2. report any problems outside your job role responsibility to designated personnel

Knowledge and understanding

  1. the main principles of health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  2. your organisation’s reporting lines and authorisation roles and responsibilities

  3. processes and procedures to be followed for inspecting and preparing tools and equipment prior to use
  4. what personal protective equipment needs to be worn when undertaken work activities
  5. what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health
  6. how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work
  7. how to minimise risks to self and others when undertaking work activities
  8. your organisation’s work instruction, information and reporting systems and documentation
  9. your organisation’s procedures for responding to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur
  10. the procedures for removing plant and apparatus using specified assemble principles, methods, processes and procedures
  11. What handling techniques and equipment should be adopted and used, in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), when removing plant and apparatus
  12. the procedures for identifying and reporting inaccurate and incorrect work instructions and documentation
