Overview 

This standard s about  producing live radio or audio. It involves directing and supporting presenters, contributors and studio teams, within live production environments.

It is about briefing and giving direction to presenters and contributors, coordinating the activities of studio teams, and monitoring progress against production plans.

This standard applies to all those who produce live radio or audio.

 

Performance Criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. direct studio teams to achieve production plans, giving clear instructions to production team members
  2. brief presenters so that they understand the requirements of their role, giving them opportunities to ask questions and seek clarification
  3. monitor the live production to identify any actual and/or potential deviations from schedules, standards and plans
  4. report to relevant people without delay any changes to previously agreed plans
  5. monitor and check sequences, and duration of items, against schedules and plans on an ongoing basis
  6. identify variations in sequences and timings which affect the running order and duration
  7. make adjustments to maintain production integrity as required
  8. identify and take immediate action to deal with breaches of the law or codes of practice, including those from contributors
  9. give constructive feedback to presenters, suggesting changes which improve the quality of live radio or audio productions
  10. provide contributors with clear and concise information about their roles and responsibilitie  and structure of each radio or audio production
  11. identify the strengths and weaknesses of contributors to meet the needs of the radio or audio production
  12. offer sensitive and courteous support to contributors when required
  13. calculate the duration of live radio or audio productions and programmes and of each sequence with accuracy
  14. compare actual sequence timings to estimates throughout the radio or audio production or programme
  15. identify rehearsal timings, and where necessary remedy any significant discrepancies
  16. recalculate timings to take account of changes to production content and running order
  17. count pre-recorded inserts in and out at appropriate times
  18. monitor performance against the script, noting any discrepancies between actual and scripted performance in line with organisational procedures
  19. take appropriate action to maintain each radio or audio production editorial integrity
  20. ensure that the use of any music or copyright material is recorded with in line with organisational procedures

 

Knowledge and understanding 

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the live radio or audio production content and structure, including its purpose and intended outcomes
  2. how to give constructive feedback to the team and to individuals
  3. the running order, cues, links and timings for a live production
  4. the legislation, regulation current broadcasting standards and industry codes of practice
  5. the presenters’ and contributors’ characteristics and preferences to inform briefing and feedback
  6. the intended role of each contributor
  7. the date, time and location of each contributors’ participation
  8. how to deal with unethical, libellous or unacceptable behaviour by contributors
  9. what inserts are to be used, their order and timing
  10. how to keep live radio or audio productions or programmes to time, manage content, and meet objectives and deadlines
  11. what licences, clearances and permissions are required, and how to obtain them
  12. reporting requirements for the use of music and copyright materials
