Overview 

This standard is about identifying and selecting musicians who have the potential to meet the requirements of a radio and audio production, and directing their performance.

This standard applies to all those who select and direct performing musicians for radio and audio.

 

Performance Criteria 

You must be able to: 

 

  1. assess the types of musicians and the skills required of them for the production
  2. establish selection criteria for the performance in consultation with colleagues
  3. identify and access relevant and reliable sources of information about musicians
  4. invite selected musicians to audition and inform them of the nature of their contribution as well as any special requirements
  5. identify potential musicians’ competence, experience, qualifications and any required license to practise
  6. identify potential musicians’ availability and costs against requirements
  7. select musicians who are available within production timeframes who meet the requirements of the radio or audio production
  8. provide selected musicians with information about their expected contribution and responsibilities
  9. seek solutions and inform production team members of any alterations when musicians disagree with the nature and timing of their input
  10. give musicians clear and accurate direction for the intended outcomes and structure of each radio or audio production
  11. offer constructive feedback and negotiate any required changes to aspects of performance
  12. identify the technical requirements for live sets, liaising with appropriate members of the technical team to confirm requirements

 

Knowledge and understanding 

You need to know and understand: 

  1. how to identify and select musicians who have the potential to meet differing radio and audio production requirements
  2. how to access sources of information about musicians
  3. when and how to contact musicians and their agents
  4. contractual arrangements and procedures, and available budgets
  5. legal and ethical requirements and obligations relating to the engagement of musicians
  6. the genres of music and how to read and interpret a musical score
  7. who must be informed of any changes to the agreed nature and timing of musicians’ contributions for the radio or audio production
  8. how to judge musical performance and identify musicians’ strengths and weaknesses
  9. how to offer informed critiques of musical performances
  10. how to deal effectively with musicians of differing temperament and morale
  11. the nature and degree of support which may be appropriate to different people, and how this may best be offered
  12. how to identify, negotiate over and resolve creative conflicts
  13. the relevant aspects of Musicians’ Regulations and how to work within them
