Overview 

This standard is about working to a specific brief for required radio and audio content – and is relevant to meeting a particular brief as a member of a production team or being commissioned as a freelance or independent producer by a client.

In some circumstances, it may involve a competitive commissioning process.

This standard applies to all those who work to a brief in the radio and audio industries.

 

Performance Criteria 

You must be able to: 

  1. engage with the person who has set the brief for radio or audio content
  2. identify the objectives, budget, intended target audience, timescales and medium for the radio or audio work
  3. agree with relevant people the resources you are expected to work with
  4. agree areas of responsibility with relevant people confirming the requirements of the brief 
  5. keep the person who has set the brief informed of progress at agreed intervals
  6. offer viable alternatives with the person who has set the brief if problems or obstacles arise
  7. develop radio or audio content that meets the objectives for the work
  8. deliver the radio or audio content on time and to budget

 

Knowledge and understanding 

You need to know and understand: 

  1. the context for the brief; the style, culture and editorial policy of a specific station or other commissioner, and the genre and format for the radio and/or audio commissioned content
  2. where to obtain reliable information about the brief, objectives, budget, target audience, timescales and medium
  3. how to communicate effectively with editors or commissioners or and clients
  4. techniques for questioning and listening and asking pertinent questions to establish the fixed and negotiable elements of the brief
  5. different ways of responding to a brief for radio and/or audio content
  6. how to factor in contingencies and respond to changing circumstances
  7. how to write up a brief and the formats it might be in
