Overview

This standard is about creating a prosthetic for use in a production.

It is required that you have the required knowledge and ability to create prosthetics and a thorough understanding of the hazards involved.

You need to be able to plan, sculpt, mould, run and apply prosthetics. You will need to work in collaboration with various production personnel, in particular with costume and wardrobe, props and stunt departments to achieve the desired effect.

This standard is for those who create and apply prosthetics.

Performance Criteria

You must be able to:

  1. liaise with appropriate people and departments about prosthetic requirements
  2. research prosthetic effects that are authentic and appropriate
  3. create prosthetics that meet the brief, budget and production requirements
  4. prepare cores and casts that are suitable to work
  5. carry out final moulding and casting of prosthetic pieces using appropriate materials to meet production requirements
  6. provide documentation outlining any necessary safety procedures
  7. maintain the safety of cast and crew
  8. source and use breakaway props as required
  9. confirm that are made to a minimum thickness and are quick release
  10. liaise and work in collaboration with relevant people to ensure that all prosthetic effects are safe
  11. monitor people using prosthetics to ensure there are no allergic reactions, excessive changes in body temperature or effects on their ability to function with ease
  12. act without delay and in accordance with health and safety instructions in the event that a prosthetic-related incident occurs on set or in a workshop
  13. remove prosthetics in line with safety requirements
  14. provide alternative solutions in line with production requirements and budget if prosthetics cannot be produced to the original design or budget
  15. document all aspects of risk assessment and risk management

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. who to liaise with in production, and in particular costume and wardrobe, props, special effects and stunt departments about the prosthetics needed and their safety requirements
  2. cuts, abrasions, wounds and human anatomy
  3. how to use artificial blood products and blood rigs
  4. the correct body temperatures to maintain when using creature costumes
  5. how to ensure that specific prosthetic are authentic and meet production requirements
  6. specific techniques to use for ageing prosthetics
  7. the processes undertaken to carry out life casts and materials needed for this
  8. sculpting, moulding and casting materials and techniques
  9. the importance of fire masks and their manufacture for use in a stunt body burn
  10. air supplies and equipment
  11. the potential outcomes of not using materials appropriately or correctly and the immediate measures to take
  12. potential allergic reactions which can occur when using prosthetics, how to recognise them and how to act accordingly
  13. how to carry out extensive tests in a suitable workshop environment and the importance of having all tests documented or videoed to avoid unnecessary danger
  14. how to remove make up/prosthetic safely
  15. animatronics and their use in creating a special effects prosthetics
  16. the use of breakaway props such as glass and ceramic props
  17. what can be achieved in by post-production and visual effects for the effect required
