EUSWNCb Install domestic meters

Overview

This Standard is about installing new domestic water meters. This applies to threaded or screw in meters.

It includes checking the meter is the correct type, fitting meters and checking operation, flushing debris and checking for leaks, fitting tamper seals and recording meter information.

This Standard is for operatives who install domestic threaded water meters.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. check available meters are as specified in work instructions
  2. check and prepare meters for fitting in line with manufacturers’ instructions
  3. pre-flush pipework and ensure chamber is clear of debris and free from contamination
  4. fit meters in accordance with design and construction specifications, work requirements and manufacturers’ instructions
  5. flush service to clear any debris and check for leaks and operation of meter
  6. check the tamper seal is intact in line with water company requirements
  7. report any issues with meter or specified location in line with organisational procedures
  8. record meter readings at installation
  9. record installation information in line with organisational procedures
  10. return recorded information to the organisation in line with organisational procedures and within required timescales
  11. follow safe working and hygiene processes in line with approved procedures and practices at all times

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:                       

  1. regulations, company procedures and processes relating to health, safety, environment and emergencies
  2. how to interpret the method statement, work instructions, approved design drawings and manufacturers’ instructions
  3. different types of meters and their required locations
  4. how to remove blanking plugs to reveal locating threads
  5. how to check the location and condition of rubber seals
  6. procedures for the installation and fitting of the types of meters with which you are working
  7. how to ensure pipework and chamber is clear of debris and free from contamination
  8. the purpose of, and how to apply, tamper seals
  9. how to take readings from different types of meters
  10. the information required including photographs, meter type, serial number and reading
  11. organisational information recording procedures and systems
  12. organisational procedures for returning meter information
  13. safety and hygiene processes and related regulatory and statutory requirements
