EUSWNC10 Restore water network assets to operational condition

Overview

This Standard is about restoring water network assets to operational condition. This includes the repair and replacement of short sections of mains and fitting temporary or permanent external mechanical fittings on mains or services.

This involves preparing to restore components and carrying out repair or replacement within agreed timescales using approved materials in accordance with company procedures.

This Standard is for water network operatives who restore water network assets to operational condition by carrying out repairs or replacing assets.                                                           

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify work in accordance with health and safety, environment and hygiene regulations and legislation
  2. carry out site specific risk assessment, and review in accordance with organisational procedures
  3. select and wear required personal protection equipment (PPE)
  4. repair or replace assets in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and work instructions
  5. prepare assets for repair or replacement
  6. carry out repair or replacement to agreed timescale
  7. use jointing methods that are suitable for materials and assets
  8. use approved materials and assets for repairs or replacements
  9. make sure that repaired or replaced assets meet specified operating conditions and parameters
  10. carry out all work in accordance with company procedures
  11. record information about work carried out in line with organisational procedures
  12. deal with problems within your control
  13. refer problems and conditions outside your responsibility or which you cannot solve to appropriate people
  14. deal with any emergencies that may arise in line with organisational procedures

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:                       

  1. relevant health, safety and environment legislation, organisational procedures and codes of practice
  2. the importance of following all hygiene procedures
  3. how to interpret r method statements, work instructions, drawings, plans and specifications
  4. the assets in use on the water network
  5. the different jointing methods and when it is appropriate to use them
  6. how to repair joints, horizontal and circumferential cracks and breaks, corrosion and interference damage and when replacement is necessary
  7. how to identify the types of pipe that may be encountered, their characteristics and how to work with them including polyethylene, cast iron pipes, ductile iron, steel, pvc, asbestos cement and barrier pipes.
